We are excited to welcome you to the Golden Jubilee ANZSGM ASM in Perth from 8 to 10 June 2022, at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. We will be holding a hybrid event to engage and connect with as many of our members as possible, despite the uncertain and ever-changing circumstances due to COVID-19.

Conference Theme

Golden Jubilee; Redefining Geriatric Giants”. 2022 marks 50 years of the ANZSGM and provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on how our knowledge, technology, service demands and provisions have changed over the last 50 years, and in turn, how these impact on our future as clinicians, advocates and organisations. Our speakers will discuss and challenge approaches to our core business, the Geriatric Giants, and introduce new concepts including cognitive frailty and global approaches to providing systematic geriatric care. We will review the roll out of the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and have updates on COVID-19 and Voluntary Assisted Dying. With a view to the future and diversity of our expanding specialty, we will hear from Perioperative and Geriatric Oncology specialists, in addition to a plenary session on Indigenous health and ageing.

Keynote Speakers

We will be welcoming Professor Bruno Vellas, from Toulouse in France as our International Keynote Speaker. He is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine at the University Hospital in Toulouse (CHUT). He is also the Chief of the Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical and Research Centre in CHUT, the Chairman of the International Academy on Nutrition and Aging and the Principal Investigator for the European Alzheimer’s disease Consortium. He is currently working with the World Health Organisation in creating the Global Strategy and Action Plan on Ageing and Health.

This year we are delighted to be able to offer two Australasian Keynote Speakers: Professor Joseph Ibrahim and Dr Michal Boyd, both of whom have special interests in residential aged care and will be able to provide insights in to the roll out of the Royal Commission recommendations, in addition to innovative models of care to best support residential care.

Professor Ibrahim is a Geriatrician currently working in the department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University, in addition to being the Head of the Health Law and Ageing Research Unit at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. He holds a doctorate of Philosophy in Epidemiology and Health Services Research. He has a wealth of experience in Geriatric and Forensic medicine and is a strong advocate for reducing harm to older people and improving quality of life. He assisted with the Royal Commission into Aged Care and will be able to provide an informed review of the role out of its recommendations over the last year. He is an entertaining and provocative speaker who will be sure to capture the audience.

Dr Michal Boyd is a Nurse Practitioner and Associate Professor with School of Nursing and Freemasons’ Department of Geriatric Medicine, at the University of Auckland. Her main research interests are care of older adults in the community and residential aged care, and advanced nursing practice. She is currently primary investigator for the “End of life with dementia” study funded by the National Science Challenge: Ageing Well stream. She was co-investigator for the HRC funded “Aged Residential Care Healthcare Utilisation Study (ARCHUS)“ and “Aged Residential Care Implementation Project (ARCHIP)”. As Clinical Leader for Waitemata DHB Community Services for Older Adults she implemented the “Residential Aged Care Integration Programme”. She was co-PI for the Auckland OPAL study examining changes in disability levels of aged care residents over 20 years.

We hope that the COVID-19 situation will have stabilised and allow as many members to attend in person, but given the uncertainty we will hold a hybrid event to include in-person attendance, live streaming, panel discussions, Q&As as well as on-demand sessions.

For those that are able to attend in person we will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee in style, with a much-anticipated gala dinner at the outstanding Optus Stadium.

The 2022 ASM will be one to remember. We look forward to celebrating, learning and engaging with you in 2022.
